Revered for his contributions to the game of golf in British Columbia as both a coach and teacher, Jack Westover received the PGA of BC Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremonial dinner on Monday night at Quilchena Golf & Country Club.
Jack’s son, Keith, acted as master of ceremonies – guiding the room of friends, family, and golf industry peers through a celebration of Jack’s career and life. Attendees shared their memories and experiences of Jack and his impact of their lives, including touching words from former student Doug Roxburgh.
“I’ve had a wonderful life; I’ve met wonderful people… And I cannot say I would’ve done better as an engineer” said Westover. Both Jack and Keith touched on the story of how Jack entered the golf industry – failing his calculus class in the University of British Columbia’s engineering program, a friend told Jack about an opening at Marine Drive Golf Club. Within the hour, Jack had ran over to introduce himself to the Head Professional, Bill Thompson, and the rest is history.
This highest level of honour has only been awarded eight times in the history of the PGA of BC, most recently to Alvie Thompson, Head Professional for eighteen years at McCleery Golf Course, awarded in 2014. Other recipients include Herb Paterson (2001), Gerry Chatelain (2006), Stan Leonard (2006), Jack McLaughlin (2007), Dick Munn (2010), Jim Gibson (2011) and Michael Parker (2012).
The event was hosted in conjunction with the 2016 Cleveland Golf/Srixon Canada PGA of British Columbia Club Professional Championship presented by Club Car. For more information about the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award, please click here.
