PGA of BC Professional Spotlight - Dec. 1, 2021
Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
To continue pursuing my passion for golf
What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
Helping people enjoy the game more
At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
I sold my first set of clubs at the age of 13! My dad was Head Professional at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, a links course in England, and I used to hang out and annoy his assistants all day, everyday.
Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Dale Schienbein is the easy answer. Although I'd been in the industry for a decade before I met Dale, he turned my world upside down when I joined his crew at Seymour. He improved my insight into every single aspect of the job.
What career path led you to where you are today?
I have been fortunate to experience several different types of facilities on my journey and have learned from every one of them, and am still learning everyday.
Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
The team at Storey Creek has made great strides in recent years to modernize the business. I'm proud to be part of the ongoing improvements that we are creating here.
If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
This piece of advice came from Day 1 with Dale at Seymour: Do everything better than it has ever been done before. That has stayed with me for over 20 years. I think if new members can passionately improve themselves, their students and the business, then they're going places.
What is your most cherished golf memory?
I've shot final round 65s to win golf tournaments, but after a bad opening round (79) at Royal Aberdeen I shot 66 to make the cut by one. This was a course record for a short time. That was pretty cool.
What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
I like Big Sky in Pemberton. I love how the ball arcs against Mt. Currie. Amazing experience.
What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
That I play golf 24/7. I wish!
What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?
Big Liverpool fan. YNWA
