Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
I dropped out of college and really didn’t have much else going on for me. I met my future wifey at that time of dropping out and quitting my job. I would go to Northview and work on my game as I worked their as a kid. Daryl Allercott kept bugging me to work there and told Chris Hoy I was interested. Chris came out to the putting green and offered me a job.
What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
Fellow pros and the long lasting friendships I have built. Clients can also become huge impacts in your life. I am a social fella and just enjoy connecting with people and there is not better network than golf.
At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
Northview on my 13th birthday. Chris Hoy hired a huge looking kid to fix ball marks and pick the range.
Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
I watched some pros in my early years and learned quickly what I didn’t want to be. From a positive effect was always my buddies Lindsay Bernicavitch (hope I spelt it wrong) Dave Zibrik, Mark Strong and Lenny Cyr. I don’t think my career and profession would have gone the same had I not met Jason Glass. Jason and I could not dream up what we created with the Tour LAB. All he talks about is dream big and over deliver. What him and I built over a 10 year run was so fun to be apart of.
What career path led you to where you are today?
I coach and teach golf. I knew that very early. By 23 years old I was full time teaching and out of the pro shop side of things.
Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
I think it was my playing side. I worked on my game but always in parts and rarely with great direction. I enjoyed playing in competition and being under pressure. Winning the 2009 Canadian Assistants was sweet. 2 BC assistant championships meant the world to me. Then recently moving to Point Grey. For Dave Zibrik to think I am the right fit for the role meant a lot. I never thought I would be a private club kinda pro but I love it there.
If you had to share one piece of advice with a new member of our Association, what would it be?
Figure out what you want to do and start doing it. Figure out where you want to work and get there. I had early adversity for sure and really just do your job well. The other stuff sorts out as you go.
What is your most cherished golf memory?
It’s all a blur. This industry has given me so many. I think recently the final round 64 in Phoenix at the Head Pro Championship to come from 21st to 2nd was amazing as there was no reason or sign of that coming.
What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
Sagebrush as it’s just such a cool place. I love the way you can just go out and hit the ball around and play golf. Score doesn’t matter and just having a good time.
What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
It is the best office setting in the world….but it’s still an office. I think I would like to be a fly fishing guide for my other office.
What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?
I have AS. Ankylosing Spondylitis it’s a not great thing for golf. Both my Si joints are fused as is most of my spine. Chronic pain for years and injuries. 3-4 years ago they figured it out. I have about 4 degrees of t spine rotation. In 2009 when I went to TPI level 1 I had 9 degrees. That’s why I have a short back swing.
